How can the metabolic approach to
nutrition help cancer patients?

The metabolic approach to nutrition in cancer care is focused on healing the body’s terrain by targeting the underlying metabolic processes that support cancer growth. It recognizes that cancer cells have a unique metabolism compared to healthy cells. By tailoring your diet to exploit these differences, we aim to create an environment in your body that is less favorable for cancer growth while supporting your overall health and well-being.

This strategy involves adjusting dietary intake to reduce the availability of glucose to cancer cells, while increasing nutrients that support mitochondrial health and cellular energy production. It incorporates a high intake of healthy fats and proteins, alongside a reduction in carbohydrates, to disrupt the cancer cells’ preferred energy source. Anti-inflammatory foods are emphasized to mitigate systemic inflammation, which can contribute to cancer progression.

Ketogenic Diet & Cancer

The ketogenic diet, characterized by high fat, moderate protein, and very low carbohydrate intake, has shown promise in supporting cancer treatment. This dietary approach aims to shift your body’s primary fuel source from glucose to ketones, potentially starving cancer cells that rely heavily on glucose metabolism.

Some studies suggest that a ketogenic diet may enhance the effectiveness of certain cancer treatments, reduce treatment side effects, and improve quality of life for cancer patients.

Additionally, the diet is known to decrease inflammation, a factor that can promote cancer growth, thereby potentially enhancing the body's ability to combat and slow cancer progression.

Fasting & Cancer

Fasting, including intermittent fasting and fasting-mimicking diets, has gained attention in cancer care for its potential benefits. Periods of fasting may trigger cellular processes that protect healthy cells while making cancer cells more vulnerable to treatment.

Fasting can potentially starve cancer cells by significantly reducing glucose and growth factor levels, and it promotes autophagy, a process where cells clean out damaged components. It also decreases levels of insulin and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), both of which are known to promote cancer growth.

However, fasting should always be approached cautiously and under medical supervision, as its appropriateness depends on various factors including cancer type, treatment protocol, and individual health status.
